Who should attend?

For people who:

Are responsible for blasting operations at a site but who are not appointed explosives supervisors under the Quarries Regulations 1999, Regulation 25 (1) (b)

Aims

To provide course members with:

• Sufficient knowledge and practical understanding of blasting operations
• The ability to be able to manage a blasting operation at a quarry
• Sufficient knowledge to successfully complete the knowledge assessment criteria for the MPQC Level 6 Award in
Managing Quarry Drilling and Blasting Qualification

Content

The course includes:

  • The chemistry of explosives, designing a blast from first principles and blast calculations

  • Control of flyrock and borehole geometry

  • Charging 

  • Profiling: interpretation and 

  • Explosives: constituents and physical characteristics, types of explosives, bulk truck operations and disposal of 

  • Initiation systems and initiation 

  • Causes of misfires, recognition of misfires

  • Checking and approving blast specifications

Number of delegates

minimum 6, maximum 8.

Day 1:

Based in a training room.

Day 2:

• Short lectures
• Demonstrations
• Group discussions
• Case studies
• Practical instruction

Day 3:

A practical exercise covering checking of initiation circuits.

Successful completion of the course leads to an MPQC Certificate of Achievement
