 INTRODUCTION TO THE HEAVY CLAY INDUSTRY: LEVEL 2

This course will give you the basic technical knowledge from “Quarry to Lorry”, of the process 
involved in making Bricks, Pavers, Tiles and Pipes. The course is aimed at any employee who 
requires a basic understanding of the Heavy Clay Manufacturing Process.
Developed by the Heavy Clay Technology Association in collaboration with MPQC and MP Awards, this 
course leads to a formal qualification award by MP Awards.

WHO IS THE COURSE FOR?
This course is aimed at those with little or no practical experience of heavy clay production 
processes. It is suitable for new operatives and non-production workers who would benefit from 
industry knowledge.

COURSE STRUCTURE
A 12-week distance-learning course, with a multi-choice closed book exam at the end of the course, 
study units include:
⮚   An Introduction to the Industry
⮚   Raw Materials and Clay Preparation
⮚   Forming and Setting
⮚   Drying and Firing
⮚   Packaging and Distribution
⮚   Quality and Management System

It is a blended learning course where independent study is supplemented by a face-to- face 
workshop, where the course materials will be brought to life.
Following the induction session, course materials are provided for you to work through with the 
support of your company mentor and there are regular assignments to support your learning. There is 
also an opportunity to have a go at some exam
questions to support your revision.
